Date: Tuesday, October 15th

Main Presentation: OLAP in Your Organization:

Explore how OLAP can fit into your overall information delivery architecture. As business has seen repeated successes in data-based decision making and Big Data is all the buzz, there is momentum behind exposing data to the business in more inventive ways. We’ll discuss strategies for exposing information to internal clients and how BI tools have decreased the one-off report workload for Mike’s team. Then we’ll build a cube from scratch and talk about what you need to learn to make these tools work for you.

Presenter: Mike White

Mike White has been focused on database development and administration since 1992 and is a co-author of the SQL Server 2008 Bible and the SQL Server 2005 Bible. He has concentrated on Microsoft’s Business Intelligence (BI) tools and applications since 2000, and has architected and implemented several warehousing and Analysis Services applications, as well as non-traditional applications of BI tools. After many years in corporate IT and consulting, Mike currently works as a data architect for AmerisourceBergen Specialty Group. He is a strong advocate for the underused BI toolset and Microsoft SQL Server in general.

Featured Presentation: From Data Source to Secret Sauce: Hive for BI Pros

Big Data is not so much about storing massive amounts of data in a common database. It is also a force of change for the organisation, and it means that we have to consider the collective capabilities of the platform to serve the business: from data source to secret sauce that will help the business to make data-driven decisions to drive the enterprise forward.

How can you get your organisation’s secret sauce? Big Data allows us to conduct better analyses because research has shown that simple algorithms with a lot of data can produce better results than complex algorithms that do not have a data-rich set to work on. Data scientists need a way of combining the scalability of Big Data with the ability to conduct extensive data analysis.

Big Data can look like a minefield: what is Map Reduce? Do I have to know Java? In this session, you will be introduced to Hive, which is comfortingly similar to SQL and translates your SQL queries into Map Reduce behind the scenes for you. It’s an essential tool so please join us to learn more about it.

Featured Presentation: Microsoft Power BI in Office 365: Your first Road

The learning curve with a new technology is always a mixture of excitement and challenge. Seeing the great new features in a product often generates some inspiration to implement new solutions for clients. On the other hand, the process of learning about the depth of the functionality and the scope (and even limits) of features is also critical in assessing the value of a tool.

This webcast has two objectives: first, to provide a demonstration of a solution using Power BI for Office 365, and second, to walk through the primary components of Power BI, their specifications and integration points, and any limitations. The attendee will get a chance to see a live demo of Power BI in Office 365 in action, and also gain understanding of all the pieces of Power BI. The webcast will not cover the steps to create the demo, nor spend a great deal of time on any one feature The goal is to demonstrate the type of content you can create, and what tools exist under the hood.

Featured Presentation: How Recognize Relational Database is “Good Enough”

In a computer project, no phrase irks me more than “better is the enemy of good enough.” It is true of course, but you have to carefully guard the meaning of “good enough” or you will have a mess on your hands. What makes a great database? When queried, most database professionals would mention normalized as one of the most important characteristics that tell the difference between a good and bad database design. I won’t disagree in the least, but there is so much more to be considered. Even if you did a great job of normalization, poor naming, poorly implemented keys, too many or too few indexes, and so on can derail your design. In this session I will present seven primary characteristics of a design that differentiates between an ugly design that will have your colleagues nitpicking you to death and one that will have them singing your praises. Characteristics such as comprehendible, documented, secure, well performing, and normalized (naturally) will be covered.

Featured Presentation: Dive into the Query Optimizer – Undocumented Insight

This 500 level session will focus on using undocumented statements and trace flags to get insight into how the query optimizer works and show you which operations it performs during query optimization. I will use these undocumented features to explain what the query optimizer does from the moment a query is submitted to SQL Server until an execution plan is generated including operations like parsing, binding, simplification, trivial plan, and full optimization. Concepts like transformation rules, the memo structure, how the query optimizer generates possible alternative execution plans, and how the best alternative is chosen based on those costs will be explained as well.

Speaker Info:

Benjamin Nevarez is a database professional based in Los Angeles, California and author of Inside the SQL Server Query Optimizer, published by Red Gate books. He has more than 15 years of experience with relational databases and has been working with SQL Server since version 6.5. Featured Presentation: Drab to Dynamite! Managed Self-Service BI Using Real-World Data

Not every business has perfectly structured data. But with managed self-service business intelligence, you can now create rich, powerful analytics solutions that let you glean and share business insights from that data. This walk-through session will begin with actual small business data in Excel format and add data from Windows Azure to expand your analytics possibilities and show how to integrate data from SQL or other sources. PowerPivot will take the stage next, joining the data and enhancing it with calculated fields and KPIs. We’ll step through Power View to produce beautiful visualizations and deep exploration functionality. We’ll finish by sharing our solution, publishing it to SharePoint (using both PowerPivot Gallery and Excel Web Services) and via PowerPoint. Whether you’re an IT pro or business user and whatever your data’s structure, after this session, you’ll have the start-to-finish instruction manual to take any data set from drab to DYNAMITE!

Speaker Info:

Sandy Rivas is a Program Manager for Power View in the SQL Server Business Intelligence / Visual Analytics team at Microsoft. A 14+ year Microsoft veteran, Sandy has helped to ship 6 versions of Microsoft Office, working closely with a wide variety of Office products such as Access, Excel and SharePoint to name a few. Her primary focus was on driving globalization and world-readiness into the Office products. Her real-world use of Excel, PowerPivot and Power View for reporting product statistics division wide, is what fueled her passion for business intelligence and data visualization, driving her to become a Program Manager for Power View.
